Reviews for The Basement

Every time I go back to Edinburgh I love heading to The Basement Bar for a top scran. Although I like a drink or two, I have never frequented the Basement Bar as a drinker as it is the food in this venue that I really love. The majority of the menu is mexican, they serve other types of food but I've never really taken notice as the veggie burritos are the best ever. Served with your choice of two from rice, refried beans or salad you get a really good plateful and the price is extremely reasonable. I have not been back to The Basement Bar since the credit crunch! but would usually have paid around a tenner for an excellent meal and a couple of drinks. As the name suggests, this venue is set in the basement of an Edinburgh building so the restaurant is quite dark but lit with candles. The staff are bright and breezy in their flashy hawaiin shirts. A must for any mexican food fans.

One of my favourite Edinburgh bars, down in a a basement at the top of Broughton Street. It attracts a twenty-something to thirty-something crowd and is blissfully free of the West End and George Street crowd of financial services types, footballers and page three stunnas, and manages to stay largely free of students.

The food is mostly mexican, but with pub grub favourites such as posh fish and chips and an excellent steak pie, and the bar sports an incredibly impressive range of premium tequilas.

The Basement offers fab food at very reasonable prices. It's laid back and has a nice bar which can get a bit noisey. The steak pie is always good and they do amazing pate too. Staff are always very friendly too. They take bookings by email and respond quickly.

The steak pie with Merlot wine is about the best steak pie money can buy.
