The Cafe Royal bar employs subterfuge to outwit the hordes of inquisitive vistors that pour down Princes Street by hiding down an alley near to the North Bridge end.

It is however very worth your while searching out this delightfully internally picturesque bar. The six individually hand painted murals on Doulton depicting inventors at their moments of discovery are jaw dropping in their beauty. The likes of Caxton,Faraday and Benjamin Franklin have been surveying the bar since 1886 and look as vibrant now as then. Add to that an ornately carved fireplace and classically panelled ceiling and you have a treasure.

Deliciously crisp Deuchars IPA is served from the substantial island bar as well as several other guest beers including the excellent Harviestoun Natural Blond and other lagers. A good selection of spirits, particularly "single malts" is available. The food is unremarkable but above your average pub nosh with an emphasis on seafood and the it is always nicely bustling without being overun.

A truly lovely elegant bar.
