Reviews for Edinburgh Castle
I went here last month, although it initially seemed quite expensive (just over 20 pounds for admission for 2 adults and the glossy guide book) it turned out to be well worth the money. They don't tell you before you go in (when they are busy trying to flog the anti-social audio guides with headphones) but as soon as you get into the castle there are guides gathering people up to take them on a tour. Our guide was fantastic and added some comedy genius to his extensive historical knowledge to provide a tour that I won't forget for a long time. My personal highlight? The victorian dog graveyard, fantastic. Visit the cafe for stunning views of the city!
I've always loved Edinburgh Castle ever since I visited as a kid.
The Castle absolutely dominates central Edinburgh. I've often wished I could visit Edinburgh with someone who has never been before just to be able to go onto Princes Street with them and say 'Look right' and see their face when they see this amazing castle that towers over the modern shopping street.
The last time I visited they gave you this audio guide thingy (Can't remember it was a CD player or some other device) so you could explore the castle in your own time and in your own way if you didn't want to go on one of the guided tours.
Expensive but well worth it. I've actually not visited the castle on my more recent trips because I've had other business in the city and I want a whole day to explore when I next go to the castle.
This is a fabulous place to visit if you are at all interested in history. You cant help but be impressed with its majestic walls and the views over edinburgh.
If you are visiting Edinburgh it is the one thing you must do.
I would highly recommend getting an interactive cd machine that is available to rent. It enables you to listen to information about the things you are interested in by pressing the number of the exhibit. It costs a little extra but enhances the visit greatly.
You could spend all day here if you had the time. When my two boys are a little bit older we are going to go back so they can remember the experience.
Edinburgh Castle stands in the centre of Edinburgh and can be seen from Princes Street. Access is through a courtyard/ parking area at the top of the Royal Mile.
The Castle can be very busy during the Edinburgh Festival season and call also work out very expensive but keep your eye out in the press at a few times a year access in free to the public on Historic Scotland Open days.
The castle has something for everyone but remember to wear comfortable shoes.
The old jail has a few mock rooms made and and you can go into some of the rooms, there are the dungeons areas. There is also a new area which shoes where prisoners of war were held and has authentic hammocks, furniture, sound effects etc.
The war museum was enjoyed buy the adults but kids quickly got bored.
Don't forget to a=have a peek at the crown jewels and the great hall.
Avoid the eateries as better to wait and go to Princes St or the Royal Mile for a bite to eat as they are very much overpriced.
I must say Edinburgh Castle is one of the best attractions in the whole of Edinburgh if not the UK that you could ever want to see. The sights you see are enhanched by all the history of the place. Everywhere you go you are seeing history. This is sometimes presented with visual aids to help you learn the history of the place.
I recommend it.
The castle is the centre point of the city and is definitely a must see, you can't go to Edinburgh and not visit it, although a bit expensive. I climbed up the hill to get to the castle and the path was actually quite good. There are so many things to see in the castle, so many different buildings. There are numerous museums, but i recommend seeing the crown jewels which are pretty. Be prepared for a lot of walking, but the view from the castle over Edinburgh is great. Don't miss the cannon fire at 1 o'clock which makes you jump!
I dnt think I could ever tire of Edinburgh castle. Ive visted three times over three years, and each time there are things, parts, places of it that I hadnt seen before. I love the history of it, the changing of the guard and of course the one o'clok cannon which never fails to make me jump! Its a great day out, though can be pricey - watch out for the free heritage days and pile in!
I was at Edinburgh Castle a couple of months ago, the first time for a long time. It is a bit pricey but is a great day out. The Scottish War Memorial is a must when you visit the Castle. You will need a full day to make the most of your visit. There are so many little nooks and crannies to be discoverd while you are there. You can use a tour guide if you want or just wander around by yourself and take your time to discover all that is there. Being there for the 1 o'clock gun going off is another must. Great day out.
