Brilliant! I loved Shakespeare's and have nothing bad to say about it. The bar staff were really friendly and knowledgeable, recommending a fantastic Italian for our tea, and the pub itself was full of history and atmosphere. I loved the sloping floors and the little snug area which we invaded, plus the back room, with its many books. It's such a shame that the Shakespeare book that made the pub famous was stolen, as I was looking forward to reading it. It's an a great location, just up from the Market Place and right in the centre of town. Prices were reasonable and the atmosphere fab. Love it!

It's a funny little old place

This is a funny little old pub and on the list of my favourite pubs in Durham. It's a place that sticks in the memory. It's been there rather a long time, since 1190AD in fact. The rooms seem a little wonky and i don't think that's down to too much drink! For any CAMRA members out there; they stock a selection of real ales with a regular guest ale. I've asked my husband for a comment and he says, 'Never had a bad pint there'. There's a bar, a back room and a snug little snug. It can be quite cramped and sometimes difficult to grab a seat. The prices are standard city centre prices but not extortionate.

To go or not to go?

The Shakespeare Tavern is a good place to go if you want the feel of an olde worlde pub and it can often seem more ‘real’ than other student watering holes. It is not a very big place and the prices of drinks are average but it is more about the atmosphere than anything else. It is the kind of place where you can go and forget that you are in a student city and it does feel rather authentic.

Plus, the legend goes that it is a haunted establishment which always makes for an interesting drink!

The pub is in the centre of the city and there are many restaurants/shops nearby making it an excellent stop off point on the way to somewhere else but it isn’t really the kind of place that you can spend an evening unless you are in some kind of brilliant company.
