Reviews for The Victoria Hotel
Known as The Vic, this a real old fashioned pub close to Durham city, on Hallgarth Street, but not right in the centre. It's a place I didn't know about for a long time after moving here in '92, but once dicovered it had to make it onto my top ten list of Durham pubs. In fact although I actually go more often to other pubs I would have to say that The Vic is a cut above. Renowned for it's selection of whiskeys, it is also a real ale pub. The interior is very cosy with real open fireplaces in different snug little rooms. It's a friendly pub with a great atmosphere although it can be a bit too popular at times! I couldn't comment on the available accommodation but I'd guess it wouldn't be a disappointment. A place that seems to beckon in the harsh Northern Winter and my first five star review.
Despite living in Durham since I was born, I only went into this pub for the first time last week.
I was greeted by a great 'pub smell' as soon as I stepped through the door - fabulous! There was a wide variety of different ales to try (and we managed to sample more than a few!) Also a great selection of whiskies to end the night with.
Locals and students seem to exist in harmony, unlike many places in Durham. The staff were very friendly and a great help when deciding what ale to try next.
The decor matches the olde worlde atmosphere which was great for pretending to step back in time.
I will definately return!
This family run pub and B & B is a great find. It is in an excellent location for the city centre, just a few minutes walk. We stayed in the room shown on this site last month. It is much bigger than it looks on the photo. The photo of the pub doesn't really do it justice as there are 3 rooms from the bar. The family, staff and pub locals were really lovely people and made our stay very enjoyable. We were made to feel at home immediately. The choice of local real ale and whisky on offer is vast. The place has a real warmth to it. Breakfast was enormous, and very tasty, much to my husbands delight! My vegetarian needs were well catered for too.
We generally stay in travel lodge type accommodation for short breaks, which although clean and functional, they lack character and real friendliness. Staying at the Victoria has changed our opinion on places to stay. I would recommend this place both as a pub to visit and a place to stay.
This has to be my favorite pub in Durham. They always have a selection of at least 5 local ales on and more types of whiskey than you could shake Scotland at. This little hotel come pub always gets top reviews both as a hotel and as a pub and with good reason, a friendly local pub this is everything that you expect to find in a place like Durham. Even the students that go there are well behaved and friendly. This is a must try.
