Reviews for The Woodman Inn
My partner and I visited The Woodman in July this year and we were very impressed. Hailing from Newcastle, we are used to having a city full of good pubs, and Durham didn't disappoint. We were staying at a Travelodge up the road in Gilesgate, which is situated 5 minutes away from The Woodman. The pub looks small from the outside, but it's deceptively large inside. The lady behind the bar was very friendly and the drinks weren't too expensive at all. The cider was lovely, as was the snakebite. There's a pool table, darts board and jukebox in the pub, which is decorated in a traditional manner. The Woodman was very cosy with a friendly atmosphere - we'd definitely visit again.
Ah, here's another one on my top ten list. It's a bit of a hike from the city centre; a walk up the hill that is Claypath towards Gilesgate. It's a traditional real ale pub with average prices and a jukebox that has some decent older music on it. There's also a pool table and they now do a quiz night. The decor is traditional style and the regulars are a friendly bunch; locals and students. They do a bit of food too, I've had the odd toastie in here. It's quite big and you'll probably get a seat. Well worth the trek out of town in my opinion.
This pub has just undergone a change of management, and I think that it's for the better. It still welcomes both students and locals, and has a good selection of ales, lagers and spirits although the latter seem to have gone up in price since Peter left. There's a quiz on Sunday nights, which is definitely picking up as the current hosts have only been doing it for a couple of months. As the new owner, Paula, has just taken over, the decoration could be said to be 'under construction' but it's heading towards being a cosy, welcoming local pub which doesn't discriminate against students.
This pub has one of the best pub quizzes in Durham. One of the few pubs that maintains a happy balance of students and locals through an excellent selection of local ales as well as other alcohols.
