Reviews for Castle Museum
Visited the castle this summer and the kids enjoyed the day. There was a clay making work shop to coinside with the mini terracotta army and they really had a great time. The special display of small terracotta figures was wonderful, the mini horses were lovely, it was all very interesting and worth a look. The museum itself has improved a lot. If you collect the walkers brit trip points you can use 5 points to get a buy one get one free entrance until the end of the year. I will go back next year, it is good to support your local museum and the kids can go play in the park after your visit as it is in the castle grounds.
We have visited this place many times and recently decided to go on the tour. It was very interesting, but no they do not have dungeons with old witch recordings, well we did not see any. The person who took us on the tour was very helpful and new his stuff, the tour of the upstairs was short but interesting as we went on to the roof and saw the small church. The castle is built on the remains of the old roman temple and the history behind the castle is very interesting. The former owner of holly trees, now also a museum, next door, was a widow and when she re married her husband was given the castle as a wedding gift, for the princely sum of £150. If that had not been so, the castle may not have been here today. Go on find out a bit more about it all, there is lots for families to do.
The kids always say the same thing when I suggest a trip to colchester castle, "oh no mum, not again - PLEASE!". It really is good the first time you visit it, but because it's not like the science museum where it is constantly updated, and its about the past, it means that nothing really changes between visits. So my title may have been a bit harsh - for first timers the castle is quite spectacular. They even have dungeons with recordings of (pretend) old witches who have been locked away. They have real suits of armour and lots of good information about the roman times- it's a bit of fun if you can't get your kids interested in history. the nicest thing is the grounds it sits in, which is gorgeous in summer and a great place for a picnic and an ice cream. don't hear the little monsters complaining about THAT idea!
Right, anyone who grew up or went to school within a 20 mile radius of colchester will have been to the castle about 500 times, because it is one of those 'must see' things. it's the biggest roman castle in the country because it is built on norman foundations - or is it the other way round...? It's pretty massive anyhow and it's an important momument because colchester was the roman capital, and is the oldest recorded town in the country. It's a good visit for kids as they have armour to try on and brass rubbings to do, and it's in the middle of castle park which is massive and very pretty. definitely worth a visit - but maybe not 500!
