109 Penarth Road, Cardiff, CF11 6JT

An unusual canteen-style setting for easily one of the best Indian restaurants in Cardiff, and very good value indeed.

The food is prepared freshly so it can take a while to cook, but it's worth the wait. Plus, you can order, then go for a walk down the road to the supermarket to pick up some Cobra beer to accompany your meal!

They don't serve alcohol but they are happy for you to bring your own.

If like me you don't live in Grangetown and find it hard to get to, the delivery service is great and you can download a menu from their website (http://www.vegetarianfoodstudio.co.uk/)

I’m amazed that there aren’t any gushing reviews of this place already, as it’s won plaudits in other publications. It’s quite unlike any other Indian restaurant in Cardiff. You won’t find any korma, madras, or vindaloo here. Instead, the extensive menu features all manner of genuine Indian and other Asian vegetarian dishes with names new to me such as Ringan No-Oro (barbeque roasted aubergine) and Wada Sambar (deep fried lentil cakes), but without exception, everything I’ve tried there has been delicious. Some dishes can be a bit hot, but they’re marked on the helpful menu. The staff are very friendly – I’m not sure how many families are involved in the restaurant, but they all pitch in. Prices are low, so you can get good value for money. I’m not a vegetarian, but I love it. The restaurant isn’t swish, but it’s clean and pleasant. I highly recommend you try it.

A quick scan of the other reviews will almost certainly reveal how good this place is. But in case you’re not convinced at a glance let me indulge you further (I salivate as I type!) Tucked away on a busy road in Grangetown, and about 10 minutes walk from the centre of Cardiff, the Veggie Food Studio (VFS) is not the sort of place you’ll just stumble across, it has to be recommended. Almost all the clientele will know about it from word-of-mouth, or sites like this. Which is partly what makes this place so special, you feel almost lucky just knowing about it. I guess that makes this review self-defeating so here’s the summary: terrible food, miserable service, overpriced – avoid at all costs (please).

To be honest, I shouldn't be really recommending this place as the more people who know about it then the harder it’ll be to get a table.

As the name suggests, this is a vegetarian restaurant that serves Indian and Chinese dishes, but this is not Vegetable Balti, pretend Chicken Bhuna or Sweat and Sour something. This is much more authentic Indian food and the choice is massive. Loads of different curries, breads, rices, noodle dishes, stuff you’ve never heard of that sounds and tastes great.

Best of all, it is all very cheap. They even do a £5 meal deal consisting of a curry, rice, two starters, breads and a sweet that all comes on a tray. There is also a range of Indian drinks and while it isn’t licensed you can bring your own. (there is a Off License next door).

They do takeaway (and deliver) as well as offering a vast selection of Indian Sweets, chutneys and starters to buy.

It is not a big restaurant, but the staff are very very friendly. If there is one criticism, it is that sometimes there is a wait for food when it is very busy. An excellent restaurant!

This is a really good option for veggies with a full and extensive menu of mainly indian dishes. The place itself feels like a cafe more than a restaurant but is the most reasonably priced eaterie I have ever been in. You simply can't eat cheaper, most take aways cost more than here. Having said that, there is no scrimping on the ingredients or preparation of the food whatsoever. You can even buy asian sweets, you know the green and orange things. The atmosphere is relaxed and laid back, it is impossible to be in any way pretentious eating here. The staff are frienly and prompt taking time to explain things if required. A must for anyone on a budget.
