Reviews for Troy Ocakbasi Restaurant
I was surprised to see a one star review for my favourite kebab place in Cardiff and then even more surprised when I found myself agreeing with one of the comments! “If you want a romantic meal in a nice atmosphere then this is not the place for it.” I’d have to agree with that. Then again, I’m not normally to be found gazing romantically into my partner’s eyes over a large doner with chilli and garlic sauce. Well not often. It’s a kebab house. A good one, but it’s still a kebab house. There are seats and tables which I suppose make it a restaurant, but it’s really a kebab house with seats and tables. That sounds derogatory and it shouldn’t because I love the place. I’ve eaten in and had take-aways. There’s the usual stuff, but also odds and ends you don’t get in every place, such as quail and lamb chops. Also the grilled kidneys and lehmacun (sp?) pizza are excellent, and it’s all cooked by hand over a charcoal grill. Also worth noting if you go for lunch rather than a post pub/club bite, they have high chairs!
I could write a book about our bad experience at Troy. Overall it was not worth going there and we don't think we will ever go there again. We are surprised we haven't got food poisoning - touch wood. If you want a romantic meal in a nice atmosphere then this is not the place for it.
Troy restaurant is one of Cardiff's hidden gems. Having lived there for 3 years I wasn't overly impressed with the food scene, too many mediocre chains and not enough interesting, fresh, cooking.
This un-assuming restaurant and take away looks as though it could be any other kebab shop from a distance but if you dare to take a closer look you will be delighted with fresh Halal meat and fish which are cooked to order on the open coal fire.
The staff are friendly and you can BYO making it the perfect place for a meal on the cheap. I must have been there 20 times & taken everyone I know from fussy friends to traditional & hard-to-please relatives, no one was ever disappointed, least of all me!
