I could get into some trouble here but the ‘Y Mochyn Du’ or The Black Pig sums up all that is bad about Welsh nationalism. Clinging on to a veneer of Welsh everything, principally the impenetrable language, the Black Pig alienates us anglophiles for no good purpose. But perhaps the roots of my prejudice lie elsewhere. Here is a pub on the edges of a beautiful park that should be a pleasure to visit but somehow it messes it all up. Overpriced drinks are my main gripe, a breathtaking £3ish a pint for bog standard, boring Brains, but then there’s the generic interior that singly fails to be cosy, and then there’s the beer garden that’s in permanent shade with rubbish furniture.

I have been here for lunch only but have really enjoyed the experience, my friend first took me here for a special birthday lunch. The atmosphere is lovely and there is seating available outside for those rare sunny days.

The service was friendly and prompt and the food was served quickly once ordered. This makes it a good lunch time option for those in the area. The baguettes were lovely and full of filling and had these fancy rice paper stickers on the end. The bacon and brie baguette is melting and delicious and there is plenty of cheese to satisfy.

The prices are also reasonable especially for the quality of the food and it is perfect for a nice lunch out.

Friendy, Great food and lovely real ale. Can't ask for anything more...looks lovely too.

During a stay in Cardiff we wanted to go somewhere for drinks and dinner that was an easy walk from our hotel. Earlier that day we had walked by Y Mochyn Du and thought this place looked perfect.

Y Mochyn Du or The Black Pig, is a great looking old pub, located close to Welsh Institute for Sport, and about 5 minutes walk from Cardiff Castle. The building was once the Lodge for the Castle, and this friendly pub is known for its strong Welsh-speaking atmosphere, as witnessed by ourselves during the few hours we spent there.

There is a large beer garden to the side, as dining area and further bar area. Along with plenty of good beers on tap they also serve up a very good selection of food.

We found a good table in the non-smoking section of the dining area and relaxed with a drink before popping up to the counter to order dinner - three of us had the Fish & Chips, with Mushy Peas, while the odd-man out had the Scampi with Chips & Peas. The food was actually really tasty - the fish wasn't too greasy, the chips were cooked perfectly and the peas were just mushy enough!
