Reviews for Barfly

Ah, the Barfly. Underground-literally and stinking of well, maybe the smoking ban had its downsides. The Barfly should be such a great venue, and in some ways it is. I’ve seen some cracking bands here over the past couple of years, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, stands out as one sensational night, squeezed up against the tiny stage, the lead singer a mere flick of sweat away (all in my direction), superb. On a bad night however, you’ll be stood behind one of the huge pillars, totally disconnected from the music and waiting for it all to be over. Plus this year the current line-up is abysmal-a bunch of Welsh emo-miserabalists and other unheard-ofs. Let’s hope it improves soon.

Barfly is situated opposite Cardiff Castle and is one of the main attractions to anyone looking to go watch live, normally, indie bands with one or two minor acts thrown in every now and again. In between sets there is a DJ to keep the vibe going.

Barfly in an underground bar and as such it can get very sweaty in there, I myself didnt realise this first time I went there and by the end of a couple of hours of dancing around was soaking. Advice: As attractive as music and alcohol is try and get some water into you or take a spare top if you can as the cold Wales night air on sweat soaked skin has caused me some grief in the past. Trust me I cant emphasise enough how sweaty you can become there.

Get past that though and you'll be in for a good night of music where the likely candidates come to the fore for example expect to hear a huge cheer and jumping youngsters (students) at the sound of The Libertines etc

Another top place in Cardiff for gigs. It's dark, it's underground and it can hurt if you like jumping around to bands and hit your head on the low ceilings. But if it's bands that you're into, Barfly often delivers. It's usually smaller, up and coming bands that you're likely to catch here of the Indie/Rock/Alt persuasion. Recently they put on a silent Battle of the Bands (as bizarre as that sounds) and hopefully this means that more interesting and exciting nights out are being planned for this small venue. If you want a good solid band watching, beer drinking night, then Barfly is going to suit.
