The Pen & Wig
1 Park Grove, Cardiff, CF10 3BJ
The clientele is an unusual mix of students and law professionals, which works surprisingly well, it's not too studenty and it's not too dull!
You can rent games like jenga too for a deposit.
Reviews for The Pen & Wig
Good place to go for a cheap drink and standard pub meal (pie and chips, sausage and mash, that kind of thing). Nothing special but for the money it's decent. Spacious beer garden is nice in the summer.

I say it's good for students, but there are always a few tables of men in suits when i've been in . The food is cheap and decent enough, and the drinks are a lot cheaper than incognito across the road!
If you want to relax, eat a big plate of stodge washed down with a few pints, this place is perfect.
It does get packed out of an evening, and as previously mentioned, outside is particularly bad. Also beware it is often part of the university's social clubs' pub crawl route.
If you're of a nervous disposition, I'd recommend you try across the road in incognito's.
Lying in the beating heart (or churning gut) of Cathays is the Pen & Wig. If you’re a student in Cardiff, you’ll have got drunk here. If you’re a prospective student, maybe you should do some work before you stumble into (and eventually out of) this pub. If you just happen to visiting Cardiff and are neither past, present or future student, you might prefer the more classy bar opposite. Not that you’ll have much of a choice, as the outside of the Pen & Wig is invariably packed and the inside...well don’t even go there...literally. Cheap drinks, raucous atmosphere, terrible food sums it up well enought.
Located at the town end tip of Cathays this is a traditional/modernised pub, which, due to its location, has managed to cater well for its punter tribes –the 'professional' and the 'student' – not historically a good combination .
The main attraction are the prices - there are plenty of drink promotions and the food's tasty and cheap.
The pub has a comfortable relaxed feel to it - if you're finding conversation difficult because you're hungover/stressed or have just spent too much time with the people you're with, you can take a book off the shelf, rent a board game or, if you're feeling less subtle, shake them off altogether and hide out in the beer garden.
They also do a regular, well attended pub quiz once a week
