Reviews for St Fagans National History Museum
We’ve been coming to St Fagans for years, even before we had children and before the Welsh Assembly Government introduced free entry to museums in Wales. It’s a great place for a wander about. Our children now love coming here and going in all the houses, looking at where people would have lived, eaten and slept in the years gone by. They especially like the houses with the real fires on cold winter days and looking at all the farm animals. It’s been very interesting over the last few years watching the development of the recently completed church. A real labour of love. If you’re going to come reasonably frequently, it’s worth buying the annual permit for the car park – I think it’s about £12.
This is a great place to take the kids for a family day out. You can visit a row of cottages where each adjoining house is a decade earlier/later than the previous. Also, you can ride in a traditional horse and carriage that transports you around the place. You can visit old fashioned thatched schools, churches, and farmhouses. There is a lot to learn in this place, and there are hours of fun to be made here!
This is a great day out for the family and the best thing about it is it's free. I think you have to pay for car parking which was about £5 but that is great value for all the family. Its open air so plenty of space for the kids to run about and if the weather is good its the perfect place for a picnic. It offers houses you walk in and out of and little old fashion shops selling those old fashion sweets we all like : ) Also there is a old school there which school cildren actually come in and act out a day from older times. It is really interesting and there are also activities for the children. Its also woth checking on the website as they do have craft and activity days there quiet often
This is an excellent place to visit and I always take visitors to visit when they come and stay.
The best part about it is that it is also FREE! So a bargain day out for families. You just have to pay to park the car and I think on my last visit this was about £2.50 - so still an absolute bargain!
The premise of the museum is a history of Welsh life. They take old buildings from across Wales and rebuild them exactly as they were at the museum. Each building is then created as it was years ago.
For me, the highlights are the small village and the school. This was recently seen in an episode of Doctor Who. I also really like the castle itself and the surrounding gardens.
You could easily spend the whole day here ass the grounds are massive and there is plenty to see.
St Fagans is an open air museum, part of the National Museums of Wales group, which records the history of Welsh life. They have the main building which hosts displays of costume and some crafts, plus the restaurant selling good welsh-sourced food.
Outside there are over forty different buildings that have been re-built on the site, which were painstakingly taken down from their original location and brought there so that they can be preserved. It is a superb place to go for a day out (when it is decent weather!) – you can walk all around the houses, go inside and see how people used to live and work, what they had inside to cook with of to light their homes – all sorts of details.
There is also the manor house – the 16th Century castle that you can take a tour around, plus depending upon the day you can talk to genuine craftsmen and women working in some of the small businesses – even try some bread baked on site!
They also host open some air theatre every summer, which takes place even if it is raining – which is an experience in itself!
Well worth the trip.
