I've been here more times than I can remember and it's my favourite curry house in town. I've been to all of the curry houses, and this offers the best experience.

The staff are really nice guys, and will let you order off the menu usually. The atmosphere is great, you aren't packed in like at the Kashmir, and they have live music on fridays and saturdays.

The curry is very nice, excellent the large majority of the time and always served quickly and very politely....

After you've had your curry, they have a lounge upstairs (the curry house is located in a lovely old building) where you can have tea or spirits.

This place is brilliant and one of the highlights of Canterbury!

Our interest was peaked initially as the first two occasions we tried to eat here we couldn't get a table. We'd been looking for an Indian in Canterbury to rival our favourite in London and once we got in (booking recommended at weekends) the Raj came up trumps.

The service is both friendly and efficient in an atmosphere that blends both historic Canterbury and classic Indian with ease and comfort.

As for the food - wonderful. The house special (The Tamasha I think...) was absolutely fantastic and even the vegetarian amongst us had great food.

I've tried most of the Indian restaurants and takeaways in Canterbury, and the Ancient Raj is the one I go back to time and time again.

The staff are friendly and attentive, the food excellent, and the prices are good. They have a very good selection of house special dishes, including the brilliantly different 'Chicken Tamasha'.

The 15th century grade II listed restaurant itself is spacious and well lit, including the most comfortable restaurant chairs I've ever sat on. The atmosphere is great when they're busy, and nice and relaxed when they're quiet.

Their birthday celebrations are certainly memorable, and conveniently offer a takeaway and delivery service. Highly Recommended.
