Bridge Road, Bristol, BS8 4AP

The Clifton Suspension Bridge, spanning the beautiful Avon Gorge, is the symbol of the city of Bristol. For almost 150 years this Grade I listed structure has attracted visitors from all over the world. Its story began in 1754 with the dream of a Bristol wine merchant who left a legacy to build a bridge over the Gorge.

Reviews for The Clifton Suspension Bridge

The Clifton Suspension Bridge is actually world famous - you just don't realise it each time you cross the bridge by car, bicycle or on foot. It is one of the most photographed objects in Bristol and quite a crowd puller. The views of the bridge, especially when viewed from Hotwells, are magnificent. Once you're on the bridge, the views upstream are equally impressive - on a clear day, it's as if the whole of Bristol opens up to you!
The bridge was designed by English genius Isambard Kingdom Brunel in response to a local design competition. The design changed several times and Brunel's design was only chosen after several others either didn't proceed or ran into difficulties.
The best way to enjoy the bridge itself and the lovely views it gives is by foot. Nowadays, there is enough protection the bridge all around to ensure nobody jumps off the bridge, either as a dare or stunt, or as a means to end their life. It is also completely safe for toddlers and small children.
Vehicles pay a toll each time they cross the bridge (50p at present), but pedestrians and cyclists are allowed to cross free of charge, courtesy of the Clifton Suspension Bridge Trust, who have magnanimously agreed to forego the official 5p charge.
The bridge is lit up at night and is very photogenic part of the Bristol skyline.
When visiting the bridge on a nice, sunny day you may wish to explore the Leigh Woods area, on the opposite side from Clifton. There are some very pleasant walks here and some fine views of the Downs and the Avon Gorge.

I wash driving a mate from Northern Ireland past the bridge a few years back and was surprised when he gasped, "Woah, the Suspension Bridge!". It was then that I realised that the bridge is renowned not just in Bristol, but on an international scale.

A great testament to Brunel and his superb engineering and building abilities, this timeless bridge is synonymous with Bristol's heritage and tradition.

You can either leisurely stroll across the bridge - not sure whether there's a charge for that, or drive across the bridge for 50p, which does seem a bit steep for what could be less than a minute's drive.

Highly recommended if you are in or near the Bristol area.

I love the Clifton Suspension Bridge! Definately worth a visit if you are down this part of the world! It is breathtaking to look at and the views whilst standing on the bridge are amazing. There is also alot of history to the bridge and there are placards to explain this up on the bridge. The Bridge looks out onto the Avon Gorge and you really can see for miles when you are up there. There are guided tours but think these are more for bigger groups such as schools etc. Take a trip out and explore the fabulous views whilst taking in the history of the bridge too.
