Situated in the heart of Brighton's famous Lanes, Donatello's is a very popular Italian restaurant seating 400 people plus a large terrace for 50 outside. They serve pizza, pasta, meat and fish in an authentic atmosphere.
I visited this restaurant on a Saturday lunchtime it was very busy, I have been to many restaurant in Brighton mainly of the budget style and thought this one was the top of the bunch so far, many be I was just lucky? but I thought the service was excellent, very attentive, the food arrived quickly and was for once all very hot. I found the food very tasty and the portion size pretty large. I was out of the restaurant in around 45 minutes, which was exactly what I wanted!
All in all I would say: Excellent service, good hot food, served quickly and at an excellent price.
Maybe I was lucky, but my opipion was at last I have found a restaurant in Brighton that know how to serve good food and the right price, I thought Donatello's will be my choice for a quick lunch while shopping in Brighton from now onwards, there are certainly a lot worst and reading the other reviews I think I must be missing out on some excellent budget restaurants somewhere in Brighton???
Probably the best thing I can say is that it isn't totally awful... however, with the wealth of good places to eat in Brighton - don't bother!
It's very cheap, food is somewhat below average, likewise for the service...
Reserve for tourists (due to its admittedly good location) and big birthday/stag/hen parties (due to a) the fact everyone can get a seat, and b) they'll be too pissed to care about the food anyway!)
This place seems to be popular but I've never known why exactly. I've been there on various work nights and birthdays etc and the food has never been great to honest. It is pretty cheap but thats no excuse when you can get better cheap italian meals in plenty of places. My friends booked a table there for a Christmas meal once and the staff were totally obnoxious and rude. If you have a choice don't bother there are plenty of better Italian Restaurants in Brighton.
I must admit I used to go very regularly to this place ~ it's cheap and central and we could always find a table and smoke.
Now I refuse to enter the place due to 2 really awful experiences (namely 2 birthday celebrations gone wrong). Weekday lunch-times the staff seemed to cope, however on a saturday night catering to a large group the staff were awful. They were rude, the waiters were looking fter too many covers, they couldn't speak english and we had to wait 45mins for our starters to arrive. We also had some lad walk in from the street; undo his trousers, wop his bits onto the table and ask "would we like pepperoni with that!?"... the meal was a disaster. After speaking to the restaurant manager I was informed that I would get a free drink when I next visited as an apology!! er I have never been back.
I have tried other restaurants owned by the same family/team and they are equally poor and tastless.
