I've always hated the fact there was no good Mexican restaurant in Brighton. I'd go to them endlessly only to be disappointed with the same old rubbish most of them churn out.

La Cantina is wonderful and restored my faith! Delicious food, and not only the usual favourites either. The service was very friendly and quick and the prices are more than reasonable for the great food and service you get.

I'm going to go back again and again so I can try everything! I really am hoping they don't suffer from the credit crunch and close, I think I'd sob.

its a shame to read the poor review on here, I've really enjoyed the meals that I've had at La Cantina, its an easy place to pop in to at lunch time and grab a sandwich or some mexican style eggs, both with a small salad and some nachos.

I think that the lunch menu is about a fiver and it makes a great change from other more standard lunches that you can find around the place

they also have a drink that I've never seen anywhere else, a cinnamon/ milk type thing that is very moreish

and if all of the food wasn't enough , it is amazingly decorated inside, the toilets are very bright and Frida Kahlo-esque

Ok, I should start off by saying that it was their opening week and they may have been having some teething problems….but…my experience at this 'restaurant' was appalling. Being one of my favourite types of food I have been to a lot of Mexican restaurants all over the UK, but this one takes the burrito!

We (a couple entertaining visiting friends) were enticed in by the colourful exterior/interior and the fact it was a restaurant we hadn’t tried before (we were unaware how new it was). It was a Friday night and just under half full yet the service throughout our meal was painfully slow. We ordered starters and mains but when the starters eventually came they were extremely disappointing. Horrendously overpriced Nachos for what they were (I could make better in 5 mins) and pitiful Quesadillas or should I say Quesadilla (there was only one and it was miniscule).
However, we put faith in the fact our main courses would make up for the poor start and after waiting a seriously unreasonable amount of time, our mains finally arrived. 2 of our party ordered the fillet steak fajitas – the most expensive item on the menu and they were shockingly bad….cold, small, tough and more resembling stringy charred bits of the cheapest stewing steak you can buy and accompanied by, well, hardly anything!

The same small portions went for the other main courses. One thing you can usually count on with Mexican food is to have a lot of it...I mean how much does some filling extras such as rice, tortilla chips, or dips cost? It’s hardly meant to be noveau cuisine!

We were all in agreement that we were not impressed by any of it and although none of us had ever complained about an entire meal in a restaurant before and were a bit worried, we requested to see the manager. We complained quietly and politely but firmly about the things which we felt were clearly not acceptable and the manager responded in a very aggressive and argumentative manner. I was extremely embarrassed as he was clearly in the wrong but none of us were expecting to have to fight this point! Eventually he begrudgingly agreed to take the 2 steak meals off the bill but not until he had been rude to the point of offensive. I accepted that they hadn't been open long but seriously...a good way to earn custom and reputation...?!

I will allow the 1 star for 'potential' and pretty paint job.

Have lunched here a couple of times and have been pleased with the quality of the food. The menu is extensive and the quality of food is good.

The place is very Mexican with vibrant colours and a lovely fireplace in the colder months.

What is surprising is the lack of people.

Service was a tad slow considering the lack of people.
