Pull a Chilli and put it into chocolate. Sound crazy? This is only one of the first of many decadant and unusual chocolate recipe's designed to tantalise tongue and offer a sensory taste overload. Mmmm

When I lived in Brighton Montezuma's was as a hidden port of salvation set amid the most expensive areas of the famous Lane's after arrival at the chocolate destination a calm ensued and wide-eyed delight always took over. At times things can get crowded (it's only a narrow shop) but lean against the counter and the staff are more than happy to provide free samples - just not the full recipe of their secret chocolate delights.

Best are the Choco Blocks. Think of childhood building blocks - as oversized chocolate chunks offer a treat for feasting! As a bit of a self-confessed chocolate snob, Montezuma's is one of the few chocolateria's to offer 100% cocoa (which tastes sharp, but fabulous btw) as well as 100% organic, fair traded and above 70% cocoa standard. I like my chocolate strong and punchy!

My favourite decadent treat when I return to Brighton, which is not often enough, is a visit to Montezuma's for a hot chocolate and brisk walk along the front. Then home for a raid on various Choco Blocks shared with friends over a nice glass of something suitably strong, spicey and heady. Enough to make you fall head over heels.

    Sweet.

FYI, yes i've ticked 'healthy food' because chocolate is as essential as a 5-a-day fruit and veg hit.

Montezumas is a chocolate shop bar none. It has the x factor or the yum factor as I like to call it. It is a tad more expensive than say thorntons but way down the price order compared to that other famous chocolate emporium choccy woccy doodles...(no offence we do like the more arty style that choccy offers but it is very dear, dear).
The selection on offer here is good and not to be scoffed at , more to be scoffed up in my opinion.
You really need to try these things they call their choco blocks, they come in fantastic mixes like peruvian (yes all the way form chocolate land) dark choc and butterscotch or milk choc with banana and pecan nuts. They are about £7 but they are a dream to munch on. If on a tighter budget or just being greedy in your lunch hour then the king sized buttons are a bargain price and you get loads.

mmm what a lovely shop, and its always got lots of tasters on offer if you go into the back of the shop
my sister in law always makes this her last stop off in brighton so that she can have treats for her journey home, the dulce y leche truffles are out of this world, as is the geranium flavoured chocolate bars - in fact, everything in there is fantastic

    wow

Montezumas say very proudly that all their handmade chocolates are made right on a sunny sussex beach or at least very close to one. Not sure if this means that this little shop produces all their lovely chocs, right here in brighton, as the shop is quite small, but boy do the chocolates taste good. The grand truffle selections are good, as you can sort out which ones you like best and are a fair price, the organic ones a re nice too, but for me it has to be the champagne truffles every time, they are a definate must have and cost around the £7 mark to start with. The immense kilo bars are a real wow and come in ready made or create your own, try the orange and geranium bar for real wow factor, at around £20 it is not cheap but it oozes real class. I love this place, so will you, go on try it.

Its great that you have a choice of two fantastic chocolate shops within throwing distance of each other! 'The other one' is very arty and understandable expensive as a result.

Montezuma's is far cheaper and not as arty. However thats not a criticism.

This is a traditional chocolate shop. With chocolate made by hand with one purpose and one purpose alone. To be eaten. Savoured. Enjoyed. Devoured. Rubbed over your partners naked body and licked off.....

This isn't chocolate thats a work of visual art, its chocolate thats lovingly hand made where the only art is in the taste. Its gorgeous in that respect.

If its a choice between the two, i say chose this one above all else

    choccy woccy rival
    Current
Is this a true rival for choccy woccy doodah across the road, well honestly yes, it is, a cheaper rival with less imagination, but jolly tasty never the less. We usually look longingly at the over priced under rated creations in the former shop, then nip in to this one for some thing a bit more fairly priced. The king sized chocolate buttons are lovely and come in white, milk and a nice dark chocolate. The chili chocolate is good too. Some times they have also had chocolate dipped strawberries which are nice. It is really worth a naughty little vsist, sshhh.. dont tell your friends they will all want some, tell them to get their own.

    Great but pricey

Montezuma's is definitely worth visiting if you are a big chocolate fan. They sell a great selection of chocolate bars (grabbing a selection of the various flavoured small bars is a great idea!) and truffles made locally. Some of the dark chocolate stuff they sell is fantastic, including the chilli chocolate (it is very spicy, well worth a try if you have not had it before). Champagne truffles make a great gift, and it is a fair bit fancier then getting the equivalent from Thornton’s! Do not go in expecting to leave with handfuls of chocs for your money though. It is pricey stuff, so take your time eating it all!
