Reviews for Athens Greek Restaurant
I went here with a large group of ladies for my hen night and we had such a fun night.
I had never had Greek food before but the waiters were really good explaining what the dishes were like and we were all having a taste of each others.
When the entertainment started it was such fun. I am quite a shy person but as the hen I was dragged up to dance ON the tables. I am not a light person and it stood up to my weight no problem!
We then went outside and were smashing plates in the street, that was such a laugh and the traditional image of a greek restaurant.
All in all, a fabulous fun night and one I will never forget.
I was first introduced to Athens on a birthday meal out for an ex boyfriend's father. While I remember my meal (chicken) being lovely and well cooked, my overwhelming lasting impression was of the raucous ouzo drinking and the evening’s entertainment – which culminated in most of the diners dancing on the tables and in lines on the street outside.
Since then, Athens has changed tact slightly, serving both Greek and Italian food - hence the Roma, but the dancing and entertainment still remains.
My partner and I visited recently during an early evening weekday - where there was noone else but ourselves there. We treated ourselves to the three course set meal and wine. I had a mixed greek starter plate, which was beautiful - meats, rice stuffed vine leaves in tomato sauce, hummus, masses of salad and pitta bread. The stuffed vine leaves in particular were lovely. My partner had a huge plate of taramosalata and bread, which he had never had before and enjoyed, although I think slightly envious of my varied foods!
For main, I chose vegetarian moussaka, as I do not eat lamb. I was so full from the generous starter, and my moussaka was served with more bread and salad. It was amazing - the nicest, cheesiest moussaka I've had - loads of vegetables in enough sauce to ensure it wasn't sticky or dry in the mouth. Much nicer infact, than one I'd had in Greece last summer.
Pudding was the only disappointment - a tasty but pre-packaged chocolate ice cream ball. Still, after all the food previously we hardly had room!
For three courses, a bottle of wine and tip we paid £50 for the two of us. The waiter was very attentive and couldn't have been more helpful with requests for information or help in choosing. After our meal he presented us with a complimentary shot glass each filled with a very strong traditional greek spirit (not ouzo) - definately the last thing we needed after polishing off the wine, but welcome non the less!
All in all, I would recommend Athens Roma for a very filling, hearty meal. Its not a romantic location - although if you go at quiet times it can be a great place for a coupley dinner. But at night, it really comes alive, with diners-turned-revellers piling out onto the street outside for some ouzo fuelled dancing.
Good location, not far from Broad Street and Snobs nightclub. A good night out all around but can get very busy and service can be slow if you go on a weekend. Good price will be going again nearer to Christmas! Live music is played from around 8pm and dancers come on later with a dj taking over later, it is quite lively and you do get up and have a little dance, one time our waiter pretty much dragged some of us up to dance! One additional good thing I will say about the food is when I was unsure what to have and not sure if I would like a dish or not, the waiter told me to try it and if I was not happy he would take it back and I would have something else and would not have to pay for the first item. Luckily I did like it as I was worried if I didnt I would have to wait ages for a new meal!
Great food..but spoiled by cold plates, busy waiter, slow service, NO price list on Main Menu list.
