Reviews for Ananda Bhavan
We went there for dinner on a Sunday evening and had pulao rice and chicken chettinad curry both of which tasted really good. We also had some of the dosa varieties which again were very authentic. The curry had a very home made flavour and taste and we loved it a lot.
Only negative was that, one of the dosas (paper roast) wasn't as crispy as it should be.
Overall loved the place and food..
F**king Night mare this resturatnt is....
Cheating ppl by ordering the items separately even though it is mentioned in part of the main meal dish....
Avoid at all cause....
Hi,
Travelled around 30 miles to have a food at this place. Called them up before we started and asked about the veg meals which is 6.99 and he said yes it is available. So went it around 2 pm for lunch and ordered for 2 veg meal. But the guy who has answerred phone told me that it is not available.then i asked why the f**k did you say yes when i called up?.He mumbled and said sorry and but i said i don't want an sorry instead i wanted a fair deal. then he went back in and enquired his chef and came back and said u can order meals but separately as we have only rice, sambhar and rasam,. I said that's fine i can't do that. So i ordered an chicken biryani and waited. The service was crap. Even though i tried to talk to him in tamil he was mumbling and tried to talk to him in english.
when the biryani came, it is mentioned in menu that it will be served with cicken curry and egg. Only egg was there and when i asked him he said u need to order that separately.I really got irriatated and asked him whom ur trying to fool?....
Why i need to pay extra for that? and then why the f**k they need to mention the items that are not available in the menu....
I shouted at him and asked is this the way u treat a customer???..... he had no answer and he said i am the one who is causing the trouble....bloody helll... i made sure i called himup and enquired and went to that place which is 30 miles away ....
I shouted at him and left the place without eating...
Guys..........Avoid this restuarant at all cause.......

Had hear about this place and was excited to finally have a South Indian Restaurant near to Birmingham City Centre and that also offers home delivery, as the only other one is Chef Vijay in Walsall and that is far too far to go on a regular basis..........
Anyway, I ordered some home delivery for myself and my brother. Firstly (and this is an ongoing problem it seems)the 'Ananda Bhavan Meals' - namely a full South Indian Rice meal with Sambar, Rasam, Kootu etc etc was not available. Oh dear.
So I ordered Rava Masala Dosa which came with Sambar and 2 chutneys, String Hoppers with Veggie Kurma and 2 Roti Parotta.
The Dosa itself was excellent, the lacy, rubberyness of the Rava well flavoured with chillis, curry leaves etc, and the Masala Potato was well seasoned with all those traditional Tamil seasonings that make it distinct from other types of Indian cooking. Coconut Chutni and what seemed like a Ginger-Onion based chutni were also great. Sambar on the other hand was a let down - watery, too much Sambar powder overpowering everything and a pungent garlic after taste. String Hoppers were also a let down. Instead of being lacy and light they were thick and dry in the mouth and not at all suited to to mopping up the accompanying Veggie Kurma - which was another completet let down; Well, we all know that a South Indian Kurma is completely different from a North Indian Kurma but this was on the next level! A bag of frozed mixed Veggies had been tossed together whith what we could only fathom to be more of the pungent Sambar and the whole lot oozed grease!
Im starting to understand what people mean when they always slag off places like Chennai Dosa saying "they are good at Dosa and Iddli but not much else!" Well that would be entirely how I would sum up my first experience of Ananda Bhavan.
I'll leave it until I actually dine there to make my final opinion on this place - oh, and the delivery driver got lost and took over an hour to finally reach my house - which is just off Broad Street!
Visited Ananda Bhavan for the first time tonight. Lovely food, very authentic South Indian. Definitely the best Indian food we've had for a long time. Highly recommended. Try the dosas, they're delicious.
We had been to many restaurants in UK, but we feel this one is the best. You get the taste of homely food and excellent service for a reasonable price.
New South Indian and Sri Lankan restaurant in eastern suburb of Birmingham.
The choice of curry is limited comparing to average balti restaurants, but has many unusual items based on South Indian bread like dosa, idli, uthappam, or parotta accompanied by meat or veggie gravy. This is not a vegetarian restaurant, but very vegetarian-friendly.
I tried a marinated and deep-fried sea bream, which was superb. Pulao rice - basmati rice steam cooked with spices - was excellent as well. It wasn't stir-fried in oil as in some other places. The owner gave me some daal (yellow split peas) to try; it was smooth and sweet; there was spiciness, but not an edgy kind of spiciness.
Service was really friendly and helpful. They did care that I was eating well.
The price is very reasonable. Curries are mostly below £5 and pulao rice £2.75 (with good quality basmati). If you have only South Indian bread and gravy, it is less than £4 without meat, less than £5 with meat.
Decor is decent enough for this class of restaurants, although there is nothing to shout about.
Will return to investigate more.

They served this bargain platter only for a very short initial period and even I, who went there in their early days, could not find it any more. The guy on the phone definitely gave you a wrong piece of information.
