My Valintines Treat AT HENRY WONGS 283 High St
Harborne
Birmingham, B17 9QH

I read a artical in a newspapper about this wonderful restaurant called Henry Wong just up the road from where i live. I decided to take my partner for a suprise meal. When we arrived to Henry wong a waiter came to us and asked if we had made any reservations i replied yes and that i had made reservations two weeks ago. The waiter could not find our names on the list he went off to another collegue asking do we have reservation for which she confirmed for us. The waiter then returned and showed us to are seats which was to the last section of the restaurant just where the coats were hung and the entrance towards the toilets. Soon after the waiter came and took our order for food and drinks, at that present time my partner had still not made up her mind so i placed my order and we orded drinks too. The drink came and it was a while before the waiter came back to take my partners order after two failed attemps of trying to call to him and another waiter passing by as we were completely ignored. While awaiting the meal we were not asked even once more time if we wanted another refill of drinks we had to call upon a waiter passing by again. When food is freshly prepared there is a waiting time in which we sat and was able to see what there service is really like. People coming in there coats were taken from them and hunged up as they were seated. People sitting around the restaurant had the waiters undivided attention as they were constantly asked if they were okay and their drinks always topped up. When their meal was served, while they were eating and after they were asked if the meal was okay. Unfortunately we never experienced such hospitality. HHMMHH I WONDER IF IT WAS BECAUSE WE WERE THE ONLY BLACK COUPLE IN THERE? THE ONLY COMPENSATION IS THAT THE FOOD WAS GOOD IL GIVE THEM THAT.

If run-of-the-mill Chinese restaurants have given you a jaded palate, then Henry Wong's is the place to go.

The service is friendly and efficient, and the decor modern and understated.

The real draw is the menu. You can do a lot worse than to choose one of the set meals. We ordered the set meal for 4 and were blown away by the minced pork in lettuce starter. Crispy duck, chicken, prawn and beef dishes followed that were equally tasty. Changing one of the portions of egg fried rice to plain rice was not a problem.

The portion sizes were well judged - we ate everything put in front of us and then had room for dessert. By that time we were stuffed, but the memory of the best Chinese meal I've had in years still lingers.
