This museum/art gallery is definately worth a visit. If you like the work of Edward Burne Jones an artist who was born in the city you will find here his paintings, drawings and beautiful stained glass windows. He was closely associated with the pre-Raphaelite movement.

There is a large and varied collection of both ancient and modern ceramics and an entire hall devoted to the history of the Buddha. A special place to visit and it is free. The Edwardian tea room is good with selection of meals and cakes to have with afternoon tea.

I recently went to the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery for an afternoon.

I was pleased to see that it was quite busy, with many families, foreign students and people of all ages enjoying what it has to offer.

The museum is in a beautiful building and has a fantastic collection of works. It also houses the excellent Edwardian Tearooms, which is a lovely place for a hot drink and piece of cake.

The museum is home to the Hair exhibition until March 2009. This was a very interesting exhibition all about hair and identity. It included oral histories, videos, and lots of wigs to try on!

The exhibition focussed on Muslim women, Black hair, rockers hairstyles, and the old fashioned barber shops.

It's definitely worth a visit, and doesn't cost anything.

The Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery is a wonderful resource in a city well known for its shopping centres. It's easy to pop in and get a bit of culture for an hour or two. It's a nice escape from all the consumerism outside.
