I've been to the Academy twice to see bands of different. It seems to be a feature of the Academy venues throughout the country that there are different sized stages within the one complex. I have seen two of my favorite artists in the past few years, Shack and Love with Arthur Lee. The venue is very close to both Moor Street and New Street stations within the city center. The bar is a touch expensive but there is a Wetherspoons close by for cheap ales before the gigs.

    Awesome venue, great club night

I love the academy. I've watched bands perform live there and found it to be a good, relaxed venue for appreciating the music. It is quite small so can get quite hot, but also means that you will be relatively close to the band, so can actually see them perform!

It does two main club nights of a week: Ramshackle (Friday) and Subculture (Saturday). I go to Subs nearly every week and have been to Rams a few times. Rams caters for the indie among you, whereas Subs has a certainly more rock-y approach, including metal, right through to ska. The people who attend Subs are incredibly friendly and easy going, so it is really easy to have a good night. At ram's the clientelle tend to be more posey and can be a bit snobbish, but it's still a good night.
The staff are also friendly and approachable, and the drinks offers are exceptional for weekend clubbing outside of student nights. The clientelle for subs especially has a particularly broad age range.

Best place for a good gig!

I went here recently for the first time, to see Aiden and Kill Hannah perform! First, I seen the big long queue to get in and thought I was going to be queuing up for ages - WRONG!!! We got in really quick, less than 10 minutes perhaps!! very efficient. Now inside....

Clean, friendly, great atmosphere! Drinks were not too expensive although not too cheap either. Still, was cheaper than a night on Broad Street.

The staff were nice and even the guys on the door let me go out for a desperate ciggie!!

All in all, a really nice night and I will definitely be going back there again.

    Carling Academy

I used to come here when it was The Hummingbird nightclub, and I'm sure the dirty carpet it still the same one! Only now, the bar areas are all vibrant, and clean and the Academy plays host to some of the best bands! Being such a small venue, the gigs here are far more intimate and enjoyable. There is no seating to speak of, so dancing is pretty much a necessity. Alternately, you can stand on the balcony and watch the goings-on from above. Smokers get a lovely inky stamp on their hand to gain re-entry, and many of the bands performing here host an aftershow party in the side room for a couple of quid more. All in all, the perfect venue for the style of band who performs here.

    Great venue

I have seen loads of bands here over the years as this really is a great venue. As I am getting a little older I like the option of being able to watch a band from the balcony where you have a fantastic view. The Academy 2 - a smaller venue in the same building is also pretty good, I have seen my favourite bands play here and have lots of good memories. I think the beer is a little bit on the pricey side but apart from that I can't really fault the place. There is a also a car park right across the road which stays open until late which is really handy.
