    Poor place to be!
    Current
I love live music, I love seeing lots of bands, and going to rock clubs, but unfortunately being in the Birmingham area there is not much choice of where to go.

As a live music venue this place prospers most. The sound is good, if not quite great, the layout of where everyone stands leaves a lot to be desired though. Because it is quite wide and not very long, everyone is spread to the sides where you can't see much.It is worth seeing bands here though.

As a nightclub this place is terrible. Roughly a fiver to get in which is'nt too bad, but arrogant, security, weak beer, half hour waiting times to get served, and poor music leaves a lot to be desired. They sell Carling for £1.50 a pint but it tastes weak and terrible. The rest of the drinks are very expensive and no one wants to que all night for a nasty drink. This place is not recommended as a club night.

    Great venue
    Current
This is a great venue for live music. Over the years ive seen many many bands here and the sound is almost always amazing. The size is great, not so small that you cant breathe and not too big to feel intimate.

The layout is well thought out, meaning if you want to get a drink you dont have to leave the main room and can continue watching the band. There is a balcony but ive never been on it for a gig, always prefering to be on the floor.

These days Birmingham Academy seems to draw many bands who historically may have played Wolves Civic instead and although its more of a trek (for me) to get into Birmingham its worth it because I think this is a better venue, certainly for rock bands.

Best venue in Birmingham, with great club nights!
    Current
As a music venue, you can't get much better than the Carling Academy.
It's near the larger end of the spectrum for small venues, but still has an intimate atmosphere.
The sound system and lights are excellent.
I've seen a few gigs here and they've both been fantastic. You can get really close to the bands, and the atmosphere is BRILLIANT. There is also the option to watch from a balcony above, if you don't want to be crushed in the crowd.

As a clubbing venue, i love it.
There are two weekly clubs at the Academy, Ramshackle (a popular indie student night) and Subculture (a rock and metal night).
Ramshackle is a pretty run of the mill indie club, with all the pretentiousness that you expect from the 'indie' crowd, but if you rise above that, you can have a fantastic time. Drinks are also very cheap, with offers such as double JD & coke for £3.

Subculture is one of the best nights in Birmingham. On a saturday night at the Academy, it plays everything from Classic rock (Guns n Roses, Metallica), to Ska, to Indie, to Drum and Bass, to Metal. You can expect to hear anything from Pendulum, to My Chemical Romance, to Disturbed, to Korn, to Fall Out Boy.
A more diverse night than most rock venues, it offers something for everyone.
With a stunningly relaxed atmosphere and cheap drinks (£1.60 for carling pints, £3 for double vodka coke), everyone i've ever taken there has loved it.

    Intimate Concert Venue
    Current
I have been to 2 concerts here, Moby and Corinne Bailey Rae and they were both fantastic experiences.

As the venue is so small it seems much more intimate. For Moby I was in the 4th row at the front and you seemed close enough to be able to reach out to him.

For Corinne we got there late so could get nowhere near the front. We stayed up on the balconly floor and were able to sit on the sofa's around the edge of the room and chill out to a fantastic voice.

Both concerts are unforgettable and hold a special place in my heart. If you are lucky enough to see one of your favourite artists in this venue it is a must have and so much better than NIA or NEC experience.
