    Cool Indie bar
    Current
Having recently moved to Birmingham from London and being involved in the Indie scene there, I was very pleased to stumble across this treasured gem. It has a great friendly atmosphere and attracts people from all walks of life giving it an attitude free feel. The music is great too, playing anything from classic Smiths and The Cure to more recent bands and some heavier stuff too. My only criticism of this bar is that it’s just too small. It has two rooms, one downstairs and a split level bar upstairs. For a great Friday night out, I love to start off in The Sunflower lounge and then go on to Ramshakle at the Academy. Indie bliss!

    Different

This bar is different from the usual fayre you are likely to come across in the centre of birmingham, it's very 'indy' and i found quite a hippy type of a place, it's also very small so any friday or saturday night, be prepared to breath in when walking past people to get to the bar.

The bar did have a family feel, as in i think the owner employs most of his family and maybe some friends. The people who mainly frequent the place are 'free-spirited' people and are pretty laid back. I went for a leaving do for people from work and although i did feel slighly out of place when i first went in, it soon faded in the laid back friendly atmosphere.

    Cosy indie venue
    Current
The Sunflower lounge is a nice bar just around the corner from New Street station. It tends to play indie and alternative music.

There are bands and DJs almost every night there, with bands often playing the downstairs room. It can get quite hot down there!

It's a small place but popular and friendly. The drinks are pretty cheap for a city centre pub and there are often special offers on.

It's been open for a few years now and is popular with students and young professionals.

Entrance is sometimes free, sometimes a few pounds depending what's on. There's all sorts of events there, from 60s music, to scratchy old records and dance nights.

    Teeny but fun

One of the small collection of nice, independent bars left in Birmingham's city centre. Just down from New Street, near TK Maxx, this is a very popular destination with a young crowd who like good live music and a retro feel. Very small, but this makes in an intimate venue for live music. You do find sometimes that the drinkers in here can be a bit retro-pretentious, but the staff have always been friendly in my experience and there’s a good selection of drinks for decent prices. With it’s retro looks and colour scheme, The Sunflower Lounge looks like its been there must longer than it has, and is a good place to go in the day for a nice quiet drink or of a night for live music and a snobs-like mix of new music and retro tunes.
