The Old Contemptibles is located just off Temple Square in Birmingham (next to Snow HIll Station) and offers one of the most reasonably priced, excellently sourced and cooked menus I have encountered for a pub. Specializing in sausages, the quarterly rotated seasonal menu has no less than TWELVE different kinds, from venison and juniper berry in spring to wild boar in winter! Your sausages can either come with a sizeable portion of mashed potato and gravy, or in a GIANT toad in the hole with a selection of seasonal vegetables and mash. A pleasant surprise is the variety of condiments including Colman's English Mustard laid out on every table. In addition, the menu also includes around twelve to fifteen other dishes including a fabulous steak and ale pie! The decor pays homage (as one might expect) to the British Expeditionary Force, and the inn is laid out in period style with sumptuous plasterwork and an extremely comfortable selection of seating.

Service is also excellent, with most meals arriving within 10-15 minutes from very friendly staff. The bar's worth visiting too, it's not just the menu that rotates! An extremely varied guest-ale list compliments a well-stocked bar which will even do you a hot toddy if you ask! Pricewise, you'd look at around £6.95 for the sausage dishes, up to £13 for the steak dishes. For the portion size, this is incredibly generous. All-in-all, the best pub food, bar and ambience I've ever experienced, get yourself down there!
