Reviews for The Bernard Arms
Having resolved to stop at the next pub that offered food after a long days drive, the Bernard arms was a welcome sight. I've passed this way many a time before and always wanted to find out what was on offer on the food front. The welcome was friendly, the setting in the middle of nowhere, the ambience acceptable if a bit tired.
I ordered lasagne as a main which arrived promptly in a shallow dish accompanied by 4 triangles of a multi-seed bread. The bread was quite nice if out of place as I the norm would be salad or vegetables , but the lasagne disappointing. The top smothered in an inoffensive bland cheese, and underneath lacking depth. literally, it was a single sheet of pasta with a sauce that lacked any real beef. For pud I had a apple pie with custard which satisfied the tastebuds. It was an apple cake smothered in a very yellow custard.
A main a pud and a drink for £18 - not a bad price - but unfortunately the food was below parr for pubs as it was heated rather than cooked and bought rather than prepared on the premises. I sincerely hope The Bernard Arms can rekindle its past Prime-minsterial glory, as food wise, they don't come off well against the likes of little-chef.
I'll come back for the welcome, but I can hang on for food till the next M&S. Sorry :-(
I’ve been taken here quite a few times by friends in the area and it is a bit of a meeting place for walkers and ramblers who wander around the area along the Rideway.
It is also just around the corner from the prime ministers county residence of Chequers and apparently he, or whoever is in number 10 at the time visits this place for the odd glass of tipple.
It is quite a quaint old world styled type pub net to the old church in Great Kimble and also has a good reputation for doing good pub food.
They also seem to be one of the few pubs in the area that I’ve been to that does have free wireless internet access in the bar, although you do have to ask for a code at the bar before you can gain access.
