There is a reason why "The Shelbourne" name is instantly recognisable whenever you hear it mentioned even if you aren't in Dublin. It is definitely one of the best hotels I have every had the opportunity to stay in. It isn't a cheap hotel by any means, but you definitely do get what you pay for. The room and bathroom are both spotlessly clean, lovely comfortable bed, colour television with several channels, kettle and a variety of drinks. The service is great, very efficient and the staff are really friendly and seem to do their best to make your stay an enjoyable and hassle free one. The food served downstairs is very nice and there is plenty of choice. All in all, I would definitely stay again!

The best Dublin hotel, hands down

I've stayed in a few Dublin hotels lately, and the standard has generally been reasonably high. The Shelbourne, however, beats the lot of them (including the Clarence) with one white-gloved hand behind its back.

Now, it's not cheap, I'll give you that. But around here you really do seem to get what you pay for. The rooms are immaculate; very well appointed with both minibar and ironing set (surprisingly rare in Dublin) and a truly astounding bathroom, complete with smelly things from the White Company, no less.

The bed is one of the best I've ever slept on. It just about beats one at a Sheraton, and the one at Didsbury House... only just. Service-wise, they practise the kind of low-key, quietly efficient service that you barely notice - very old school and my favourite kind.

There are a number of bars and restaurants in the hotel (I didn't find them all, but I'm SO going back so maybe I'll report on the individually). The food in whichever one I ate in that evening was top quality, from a small but very well chosen menu and wines from a bible-sized wine list.

If you're after a cheap break, don't bother. If, however, you believe that the hotel is part of your holiday and should be the best you can afford, break out the credit card and book yourself into the Shelbourne. You'll love every second you're there. There's literally nothing I can find to complain about.

And no, I don't work for them!
