6 place Saint Germain des Prés, Paris, 75006

What is the point of going to a place where they take you an arm and a leg for an espresso, where you are surrounded with American and Japanese tourists when you can go to hundreds other places and have the real thing?

The time when French intellectuals and students were at the terrace of Les Deux Magots discussing and rebuilding the Wordl is long gone! They also want to be in better places and far away from the very noisy, polluted and crowded Boulevard Saint Germain.

The Ultimate French Cafe !

Great breakfast and light fare perfect for people watching in the lovely Bd St Germain

Ok, so you probably know about this place and maybe it is a tourist trap or maybe it is just an institution that everyone knows. I like it a lot though and I know I am in Paris when I settle down for a coffee (again) and croissant (yes another one). And I have had a simple lunch here quite a few times too.

Anyhow, the main attraction in Les Deux Magots is not really the food (whilst actually it is pretty top drawer in a simple French kind of way), you just know you are in Paris and get to look at everyone passing by wondering what it would be like if you actually lived here.

Why Les Deux magots is called the two maggots I cannot remember now, but the funny name is certainly part of its eccentric charm.

If you have not done so then grabbing one of those shamelessly street facing chairs (only in France) is a fun experience.

Small word of warning, the prices reflect the fact that this place is somewhat of an institution, so brace yourself to be a little surprised at the bill. But then this is a top spot right in posh Saint Germain...
