    Tradition, excellence and quality.

I am a very regular visitor to Brussels and this is, in my humble opinion, the best café brasserie in the city centre. It has all the quirky character of a good English pub; the decor is completely original from the 1920's and over the many years of smoking (which is still permitted) within these walls it has acquired that warm yellowing that used to be the hallmark of a great English country inn.
The large range of beers available is mouth-wateringly attractive and the homemade snacks on offer are equally scrumptious. My favourite beer is the Kriek made with sour Cherries; it produces a full-on assault on your senses and pallet and is utterly delicious. If you fancy something a little lighter, try the draft Maes Pils. If you have the time, try everything!! You won’t be disappointed.
The excellent range of traditional snacks and light lunches are all prepared in-house. If you sit right up the back you can see into the small kitchen, where singlehandedly all the food is prepared to order. The tête presse tartine and omelettes are both highly recommended light lunches.
    VERY highly recommended!

Although this place appears in most travel guides as a "must visit", probably as it is not too near to the Grand Place then thankfully it has retained a somewhat "local" atmosphere, but not in a xenophobic sense at all.

I like the description of the decor I read somewhere -"rococo boudoir", which suits it perfectly. A happy gallimaufry of styles - off-white walls and pillars, huge gilt mirrors, faded pictures, stained glass and row upon row of perfunctory tables.

But it all works, they serve a selection of local beers, a good wine & spirit list, cold snacks (such as bread, cheese & assorted meats & pickles) and everyone contributes to the gentle hum of amiable discourse. This should be on every vistors list but ironically I'm glad it isn't !!
