North Shields isn't what anyone would describe as a pretty place, but what it lacks in looks is more than compensated by its gritty charm and, in the most part, very friendly locals. Situated on the banks of the River Tyne, it was once a mining town and thriving fishing port; sadly now there are but a handful of vessels that ply their trade from Fish Quay. The maritime connection continued with Smith’s Dock and A&P ship repairs, where ships were built or repaired; this area is now the subject of a huge redevelopment initiative which will include the construction of over 1000 new homes most of which will be well beyond the means of any local working folk...
