North Shields isn't what anyone would describe as a pretty place, but what it lacks in looks is more than compensated by its gritty charm and, in the most part, very friendly locals. Situated on the banks of the River Tyne, it was once a mining town and thriving fishing port; sadly now there are but a handful of vessels that ply their trade from Fish Quay.
