Whitechapel has quite the illustrious past. It was here that Jack the Ripper found his victims, the Elephant man was exhibited in a shop window and in the Whitechapel Bell Foundry that the original bell of Big Ben was cast. At present, the population is very much a working class migrant one, with lots of Bangladeshi influence over the area particularly in the market with its array of colourful stalls & spicy aromas. Whitechapel Road lies at the heart of the community and is where number of authentic Indian restaurants and the crazily decorated Urban Bar are to be found. The Rhythm Factory, meanwhile, is doing much to promote the areas prominence in the scuzz rock scene. An ever growing ambitious ethic and atmosphere is aided by the internationally acclaimed Art gallery, which once displayed Picassos Guernica and has become an inspiration to many local young artists.
