It notoriously rose to fame back in 2005 when an extreme case of mistaken identity saw police shoot dead Jean Charles De Menezes at its tube station. But as an area, Stockwell is far less high profile. A place which has both its bad and good parts, it lacks the type of attractions to make it shine. And with neighbours Clapham and Brixton currently topping all the cool charts, its not hard to see why Stockwell stays in the shadows. Shopping facilities don’t far exceed an Iceland whilst at night quiet takes first priority. Plaudits are quick to point out that Stockwell is an example of true London; residential, a mixed community and not showy. Yet that’s hardly of much interest to those looking for an exciting evening out. Its vast Portuguese community, however, are a major asset and their influence is felt within the sprinkling of restaurants and café’s; Bar Madeira is great for some Mediterranean seafood. The Royal Albert, meanwhile, is a locals favourite bar; trendy yet traditional.
