Opinion is divided on Camberwell. Some describe the joys of a multi cultural area that has yet to have a bunch of yuppies declare it their coolest place of the hour. Others take one glance at its place on the crime hotspot list and look no further. Admittedly the area is not the prettiest, the Green is probably not a place for a picnic and with Central London a few bus stops away there is a temptation to head there instead. Its strong ethnic influence, however, is aided by that of a thriving student population to create an atmosphere which is electric and eclectic. The cocktails are cheap and the restaurants varied. Local stores, contribute to a strong community feeling with exotic goods on offer. And even with the addition of arty students and stylish bars Camberwell has still managed to maintain its own identity, which is a rarity that should be savoured.
