One minute your notorious football fans are throwing bricks at horses and you are apparently a haven for drug dealers. Then someone decides to open up a design studio and suddenly professionals are purring whilst critics claim youre the new Clerkenwell. Now in the full swing of regeneration, a number of locals reckon Bermondsey is losing its identity. Theyre not far wrong. Formerly a working class district with strong emphasis on family values, one only has to look at Bermondsey Street lined with trendy bars and funky shops to see this is not the kind of place where community spirit prevails over cool. Admittedly, it's excellent for those looking to uncover somewhere new and vibrant. It is situated by the Thames, the Antique market is interesting and the restaurants are internationally flavoursome. But Bermondsey was once rebellious. Now its heading towards being a replica. At least Manzes Pie and Mash shop still serves up the last remaining portions of tradition.
