Aldgate is perhaps unremarkable save for the being the patch of road which joins the Square Mile of the City to its neighbour, Whitechapel. During the week, the area is busy as Bengali stallholders from the nearby markets rub shoulders with early morning City workers. Aldgate East tube station is the starting point for a grimly fascinating weekly 'Jack the Ripper' walking tour serving as a reminder of the area's nefarious history. The rich cultural diversity of the people who have called Aldgate home is reflected in the happy co-existence of the old fashioned cockney boozer that is 'The Still and Star', via Tubby Issacs fish stall on the junction of Brick Lane and Aldgate East, to the numerous tandori restaurants dotted along Aldgate High Street. Attractions include: Whitechapel Art Gallery, The Bell Foundry museum (more interesting than you might think!), and the excellent restaurants and funky bars of Brick Lane.
