Anyone For Carrots?

It’s all getting a bit like ‘The Good Life’ round here isn’t it - just the other day we were encouraging you to bake your own bread, now we’re on to vegetables. Yes, even the gardenless amongst us can be utilising outside space to grow stuff fit for the dinnerplate, and urban food growing network Food Up Front is here to help.

They’ve been getting in the news recently with their ingenious urban farming scheme. It’s simple: pay £20 and you get a starter pack, a year’s worth of support from a local Street Rep and invites to Food Up Front gatherings and workshops where members can share expertise and socialise. As well as “increasing the amount of vegetation in the urban environment”, Food Up Front want to increase community interaction by getting people chatting to their neighbours - we think that’s wonderful.

The Food Up Front scheme is currently only available in certain areas of London, but the more people who apply to be Street Reps, the further the network can grow - what else are windowsills good for?

If you’re a big fan of the vegetable check out David Bann in Edinburgh, Food For Friends in Brighton or Beatroot Cafe in London. Tasty!
